CA Doctors May Go To Jail
For Reporting HIV
From Dr. Carey Savitch, MD

As you are already aware, politicians are working at the California State Office of AIDS (only a few deserve to be called health officials). These politicos have chosen to ignore CDC recommendations, and are requiring that California physicians report HIV by a cryptic code---thus obstructing contact tracing and partner notification. They have acknowledged in private (and publicly) that they are doing this to appease the AIDS activists. They are willing to enact a system that they acknowledge is "dangerous" to public safety.

Physicians in California are required to report 81 diseases by name to pubic health officials. This is meant to control the spread of disease and assist people into earlier treatment. HIV should be on the top of this list, not off the list.

Physicians who report HIV by name (to protect the public) will be in violation of health and safety code, and could be subject to 6 months of jail time, civil litigation, $10,000 fine, and loss of medical license. I urge all of you to click the blue (above) and respond to this collapse of public health.

The pharmacists, the labs, the insurance companies know who all of our HIV patients are. What other disease do we Rx AZT, Saquinavir? Any other disease we order HIV Viral Loads? The only people kept out of the loop are public health officials and the patient's partners. It is time HIV be treated as a public heath problem, and not a civil rights issue. Not doing partner notification and allowing this infection to spread is a national disgrace.

420,000 Americans have already died of AIDS. Another 1,200,000 are HIV infected and will suffer and die from AIDS. One woman is becoming HIV-infected every 12 seconds around the globe. We must do all we can to assist those who are already HIV-infected. We must do all we can to prevent new HIV infections.

Just a reminder: Before Randy Shilts died of AIDS, he left this message in his book, And The Band Played On. "AIDS didn't just happen to America. Instead it was allowed to happen by an array of public institutions." So please click the blue above and write to one of these institutions.

Chins up, we have a long way to go.
