Just when Chupacabras sightings appeared to be a thing of the past, a new event experienced by residents of Tocopila has reinforced interest in this strange "animal".

It all started with a trip to Antofagasta undertaken by a well-known local businessman --who refused to be identified for fear of ridicule-- aboard his truck in the company of two workers..

Once the truck had progressed 20 kilometers to the south, the tranquil ride was abruptly shattered by the appearance of a creature that almost collided with the truck as it flew. .

What startled the entrepreneur the most about the strange animal, which glided from the sea toward the hillside, was that it made an abrupt vertical swerve when it realized it was about to hit the truck..

The resident of Tocopila who witnessed this event stated that birds don't usually swerve vertically, and much less so quickly. "I travel constantly, and nothing like this had ever happened to me before," he stated. .

He claimed that the creature was larger than a condor as was brown in color, with wings, large eyes and something resembling feathers. He noted that the figure was very similar to the images constantly being shown in the newspapers: large eyes, a pointed snout and a horrifying appearance.

He explained that after the event, he discussed the sighting with the two workers and all three agreed that the had seen the "Chupacabras".

Based on previous cases, the men confirmed said hypothesis, since the creature appeared at 5:30 a.m. before sunrise, and all other apparitions were recorded at night.

Other Cases

Last year was plagued with Chupacabras-related news stories. Some of the apparitions in Chile's 2nd Region affected Calama, Cobija, Sierra Gorda, María Elena and Tocopilla.

For instance, on May 23, 2000, the creature staged an attack on Maria Elena's Cuchillon sector, slaying over ten pigs. .

Another case was recorded in Caleta "El Muerto", located 6 kilometers to the north of Caleta Huamán, when a shrimp-diver from Tocopilla in the company of other workers, drew samples of a mineral and a strange beast attacked their campsite. The only evidence they were able to obtain were hair samples from this bizarre creature
