- GENOA - A demonstrator protesting
against the G-8 summit in Genoa, Italy, has been shot in the head and
run over by a paramilitary police van. Police say the man has died.

- Demonstrators and police have been having at each other
for hours. The protesters have been throwing firebombs and stones. The
police have been replying with water cannon, clubs and tear gas.

- Thousands of angry anti-globalization activists are in
the Italian city as are the leaders of the world's richest nations. The
G-8 meeting got underway on Friday.

- Officials say 31 police officers have been hurt. There
are reports that even more demonstrators have been injured. There have
been dozens of arrests.

- At one point, the crowds came close to breaking through
the fence surrounding the high-security "red zone" where the
summit is being held.

- A police officer fired into the air after being cornered
by a crowd but no-one was hurt and he managed to escape.

- Inside, the government leaders said they've agreed to
set aside a billion dollars to treat AIDS and other infectious diseases
in poor countries.

- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan joined the leaders.
He said the money "begins to match the scale of the epidemic"
but he said much more was needed.

- Annan told the world leaders that fighting disease in
poor countries will take as much as $10 billion.
