8 Civilians Killed In US-Led
Airstrikes Says UN

ISLAMABAD (PNS) - United Nations Wednesday said that eight people of a family were killed in US-led airstrikes on Taliban's stronghold Kandahar in Afghanistan.
 
"A 50 years old person arrived at Kalli Faizo today (Wednesday) and informed of this tragic incident. The person was horribly shaken and sobbing uncontrollable ", UNHCR spokesperson Peter Kessler told newsmen here at a daily press briefing.
 
He said, yesterday 2000 refugees crossed into the NWFP while some 540 people arrived in Kali Faizo Chaman border in Balochistan province. They were in vulnerable conditions, he added.
 
Regional Co-ordinator of the World Health Organisation for Afghan crisis Dr Mohammad Jummah who was also present at the briefing told the newsmen that about 30 million children in Pakistan and 5 million in Afghanistan would be immunised of Polio drops from November 6-9 during polio eradication program.
 
"Situation in health sector is heading from bad to worse in Afghanistan. Half of the children are under weight and with less chance of survival as the winter approaches. About 45 women are dying during pregnancy," he disclosed.
 
UN spokesperson Stephanie Bunker at this occasion said that memorial service for those mine workers, killed in US bombardment were held today and speakers paid tribute them for their work in this war torn country.
 
She said that the situation in Northern Afghanistan was complex and provision of assistance to the people there is difficult. "Luckiest people are living in buildings while most are living in caves and tents."
 
About 0.5 million people have been displaced in the North of the country while more than 2 million are in urgent need of food. "What we should do is to provide them tents and food," she said.
 
UNICEF representative said Chulhu Hyun at this occasion said that some 55,000 blankets and 47'000 sweater have been distributed among children in Afghanistan so far.
