- WASHINGTON (PNS) - The United
States has expressed confidence in Musharraf regime in Pakistan for taking
all necessary steps to safeguard its nuclear weapons.
-
- State Department spokesman Richard Boucher declined to
confirm or deny reports that plans were underway to eliminate Pakistan
nuclear weapons if General Pervez Musharraf falls. The US has a "good
working relationship" with the Musharraf government, he said, adding:
"We expect those to continue in the weeks and months ahead."
-
- He said Pakistan was well aware of the importance of
securing any nuclear material, components and weapons that it has. "We
are confident that Pakistan is taking steps to assure the safety of these
assets. And we would just say that the current situation requires that
all states pay attention to such concern," he added.
-
- Boucher said nuclear safety was an important element
of US discussions with Pakistan and India. "We do discuss with them
and with the India's questions of nuclear safety. We expect to continue
our cooperation with them in the future", he added.
