- LONDON - In a gruesome but
ultimately unverifiable fragment to add to the wild rumour, high-pitched
gossip and sensationalist speculation surrounding Osama Bin Laden, he is
now alleged to have made plans to die live on prime time television.
-
- The TV channel earmarked for the morbid exclusive is
Al-Jazeera, which has enjoyed unparalleled access to al-Qaeda scoops so
far.
-
- Journalists at the London offices of Al Jazeera said
their channel appeared to be completely unaware of the unique and dubious
suicide pact with Bin Laden.
-
- Media commentators said the claims were startlingly vulgar
but could perhaps be eerily consistent with the Saudi dissidentís
unique understanding of the Internet and satellite television age.
-
- Bin Ladenís desire to die in the flickering blue
light of more than a billion television sets all over the world may be
of a piece with with the strategy of executing live televised attacks on
the World Trade Center exactly three months ago, they said.
-
- According to reports in the British media, the remarkable
claim by Bin Laden ís estranged wife, Sabiha on Russian television,
emphasised his desire to motivate others to continue the fight against
America.
-
- By dying dramatically ñ and very publicly - at
the hands of his eldest son before the CIA or British SAS catch up with
him, Bin Laden hopes to serve as the prime recruiting seargent for his
cause long after his death, she said.
-
- The 45-year-old, who is reported to be the divorced mother
of at least three of Bin Ladenís children, was quoted to say that
the televised suicide would fire the starting gun for other attacks in
world capitals, such as Washington, London and Paris.
-
- "His elder sons will kill him and that will be the
signal for a new wave of terror," Sabiha said, adding that the multiple
targets included "Öthe Capitol in Washington, Big Ben in London
and the Eiffel Tower in Paris".
-
- Meanwhile, the Scottish Daily Record newspaper also continued
the general British fascination with the women in Bin Ladenís life,
by reporting remarks made by his mother.
-
- Speaking on Sunday for the first time about Bin Ladenís
terrorist links, his mother is quoted to say she was not angry with him,
just disappointed.
-
- "I do not approve of his ambitions and the actions
attributed to him, but I am not angry with him. Like all mothers, I am
satisfied and pleased with my son and pray to God to guide him and save
him," she reportedly said.
