- PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. military
is sniffing out the worst possible odours to create a universally offensive
stink bomb to help clear crowds.
-
- 'People want to flee in disgust' The non-lethal "odour
bomb" is said to smell like rotting garbage, human waste and burning
hair, which produce a negative reaction in all cultures.
-
- Researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia
reported their odour weapon in the Jan. 7 issue of Chemical & Engineering
News.
-
- Tests show the odours "are potent in making people
want to flee in disgust," and can cause shallow breathing, increased
heart rate and lead to nausea.
-
- The idea is to gas dissidents and rioters with a mix
of smells so repellant that they would be forced to flee an area before
injuries or deaths could occur.
-
- Scientists say they are still trying to work out some
bugs, such as how to contain the odours before they are released.
-
- Biological odours were most likely to be recognized.
About 50 chemists probed other unpleasant human smells such as underarm
odour, bad breath and human pheremones.
