India today rejected Pakistan's demand for de-escalation on the border asserting it would continue to take whatever steps are necessary to defend our interests till there was "satisfactory improvement" of the situation on ending cross-border terrorism.

Asked what India's response was to Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's statement that New Delhi must take steps to de-escalate the situation, an External Affairs Ministry spokesperson said, "We stand exactly where we stood before." She said "the steps we have taken are precautionary measures which we are perfectly entitled to take in the defence of our sovereign national interest".

India has "time and again" emphasised the need for Pakistan to stop infiltration and put an end to cross-border terrorism, she said. "Until and unless we see an end to that and satisfactory improvement on that front, we would continue to take whatever steps are necessary to defend our interests," she said.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell spoke to External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh in Madrid yesterday and briefed him on the ongoing visit of Musharraf to the U S. Powell also spoke about a speech to be made by President George W Bush on climate change initiatives, the spokesperson said.
