Pakistan Increases Military Purchase
Efforts With France And China

3-9-2

Islamabad (PTI) - Pakistan has stepped up defence contacts with France and China to acquire a range of weapon systems, including the French-built Mirage planes as well as new submarines.

While a high-power Chinese delegation led by its Deputy Chief of Army, Gen Xiong Guangkai, was here for the past few days holding talks with top Pakistani officials in the defence establishment, including President Pervez Musharraf, a French Senators' delegation was equally busy finalising a list of equipment in which Pakistan's security forces were interested.

French delegation, led by Andre Duliat, Vice President of the Commission for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces, discussed with Pakistani military top brass the purchase of various military equipment, including Mirage fighter aircraft and French submarines, daily 'Dawn' reported today.

It said the deal on Mirages and Subs has not yet been finalised but for the time being both sides "have expressed willingness" to once again take it up and clinch it as early as possible.

Pakistan recently enhanced military cooperation to set up joint ventures with a number of countries, including Turkey and Romania, for the manufacture of sophisticated arms including ammunitions for Al-Khalid Tank, T-85 Chinese Tanks and T-80 Ukrainian Tanks, the newspaper said.

Military cooperation with Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom was also being enhanced to buy different kinds of new weaponry, it said.
