- CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters)
- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez resigned on Friday after senior military
officers blamed him for violence against an anti-Chavez protest in which
at least 10 people were killed, the country's armed forces chief
said.
-
- "The president was asked to resign from his post
and he accepted," Gen. Lucas Rincon told a news conference broadcast
live on national television.
-
- Rincon said all of the members of the armed forces'
existing
high command were also tendering their resignations.
-
- The announcement came after a succession of senior
officers
from all four branches of the military -- army, air force, navy and
National
Guard -- appeared on television calling for the president to resign.
-
- One army general said the country was under the control
of the armed forces.
