- Convicted criminals who have been recently released from
jail in Victoria and refuse to provide DNA samples within 28 days face
arrest from today.
-
- Under new state laws, criminals must submit to a mouth
swab, and if they do not, they will be restrained by police, and a nurse
will take a blood sample.
-
- Police Minister Andre Haermeyer says the new powers will
help investigate unsolved crimes.
-
- "It can help us bring a number of offenders in some
very serious crimes to justice and bring closure for the victims and the
families of the victims of those crimes," he said.
-
- "But also it can relieve a lot of people who have
no connection with that crime from the weight of suspicion."
