The West Nile virus continued its spread through the northeastern United States yesterday with the discovery of an infected dead robin in Boston.

The mosquito-borne virus was detected in the Western hemisphere last year when it killed seven people in New York and caused 62 to be ill.

This year the virus has been detected in other states in the region, but so far there has been only one confirmed human victim, a 78-year-old man from Staten Island, New York, who suffered fever, dizziness and lightheadedness. He was released after a week in hospital to recover fully at home.

Of 31 infected birds found so far in New York City this summer, 26 were in Staten Island. The virus has been found in Boston in dead crows. The discovery of the robin indicated that West Nile was being transmitted within the city
