India Says Pakistan's Military
Ego Boosted By China

10-5-2

BOMBAY (AFP) - Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes said Pakistan's military ego had been boosted by the economic and military support the country received from China.

"Everyone knows what Pakistan will be without China. Its ego is boosted purely by the support it gets from China," Fernandes said at a function organised by the ruling Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here.

"They (Pakistan) have been getting economical and military support from China since the post-partition (1947) era."

Fernandes said Pakistan's growth in military could be understood from the fact that before India conducted its nuclear tests in 1998, Pakistan was already prepared with a nuclear arsenal.

Arch-rivals India and Pakistan conducted nuclear tests in 1998 attracting economic sanctions from the United States and the other developed countries.

Fernandes said the government was fighting the war on terrorism on all the required fronts and the ongoing Kashmir elections had proved India's committed efforts in this direction.

"The world media was present on the day of the first round of the elections and they have seen how free and fair the elections are being held," he said.

"The elections is a way to counter terrorism by proving that using only bullets against terrorism is not the only way to end it."
