- DODOMA, Tanzania (AFP-Sapa)
- An earthquake hit the Tanzanian capital of Dodoma on Monday, causing
some cracks on the walls of the country's parliament, national assembly
speaker Pius Msekwa said.
-
- Other residents said they felt the tremor at 6.30am (03h20
GMT). An apparent aftershock shook the city at 11.20am (08h20 GMT) sending
members of parliament stampeding out of the national assembly, a reporter
who was in the press gallery, said.
-
- There was no official word on the intensity of the quake
or on damage to other buildings.
-
- Building technicians had earlier inspected the cracks
on the first and third floors of parliament and allowed members to continue
with their session, saying there had been no structural damage to the building.
-
- But Msekwa adjourned the house until late afternoon following
the second tremor to allow experts to carry out more inspections on the
building.
-
- Msekwa said the earthquake had also been felt in the
northern region of Shinyanga, Mbeya in the south-west and Morogoro in the
south-east.
