- MEXICO CITY (EFE) - The Mexican
government on Thursday said it is challenging before the International
Court of Justice at The Hague death sentences leveled against 54 Mexican
nationals currently jailed in the United States.
-
- According to Mexico, U.S. state and municipal authorities
failed to inform Mexicans of their right to contact their country's consulate
upon arrest, as established by the Vienna Convention.
-
- "The motion deals with the 54 cases of Mexicans
who have been sentenced to death, who, as a result of said violation, did
not receive timely assistance from Mexican consular officials who may have
been able to prevent capital punishment from being applied," the foreign
secretariat said.
-
- After "exhausting all avenues before U.S. courts
and administrative authorities," Mexican officials said they turned
to the court to pressure the United States to review and reconsider the
sentences.
