- EDMONTON - Dr. George Luterbach, spokesman for the Canadian
Food
- Inspection Agency, was cited as saying that federal veterinarians
have
- started to destroy and bury 350 deer north of Edmonton
to contain an
- outbreak of chronic wasting disease.

- The slaughter -- expected to take several days -- began
Tuesday at a
- disposal site on private property.

- All of Heinen's deer were ordered destroyed to allow
testing of their brain
- tissue.

- There is no live-animal test for the disease.

- Len Jubinville, a pioneer Alberta deer and elk farmer,
was cited as saying
- he is horrified that a neighbour's herd is being slaughtered
because one
- case of chronic wasting disease has been found, adding,
"It's a holocaust
- and it's unnecessary. The case was discovered three months
ago and only now
- are they doing anything about it. There is no need to
kill more than 300
- white-tailed deer like this. I'd bet my farm that they
don't find any
- other cases in that herd."
