A New America

By Gracchus
2-19-3

I am a career employee of the federal government in Washington, D.C. For most of the last 30 years, I have worked in offices within two miles of the nation's great landmarks: the Washington Monument, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the Smithsonian Institution, the White House, and the Capitol. Just across the Potomac River is the Pentagon.

Today, America is in crisis. The outcome is unknown. The danger is great. But the nature of the crisis is different from what our political leaders have said, and so is the solution. I am going to describe conditions as I see them, and I am going to speak with a certain degree of authority. So please hear, and try to understand me. The first thing I want to say is that I can understand why so many Americans believe the federal government is no good, given its frequent bad behavior in recent decades, especially in its relations with other nations. But our nation is a republic. We elect our leaders, so we must share responsibility for what they have done or not done. And our nation was founded on highly idealistic principles. Read the Declaration of Independence again, as well as the Preamble to the Constitution and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

We have had great leaders, some of the greatest in world history, including Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Some would not agree that John F. Kennedy should be on that list. Certain of the media have mounted a campaign to denigrate Kennedy and discredit his legacy. But Kennedy was a visionary. He was one of the key figures in creating a new modern consciousness that can take us far into the future.

In the two years and ten months of his presidency, Kennedy created the conditions which allowed the civil rights movement to eventually succeed. Following the Cuban missile crisis, he moved to lay the groundwork for world peace, through the nuclear test ban treaty and by opening a dialogue with the Soviet Union. This likely has saved the world so far from nuclear Armageddon. He struggled against the tyranny of the American financial oligarchy - the Money Power - centered in Wall Street. And he started a great expansion of modern technology, based on rocket and computer science, through sponsorship of the manned space program. Kennedy was the founder of today's progressive movement. All future progress in American governance will take as a starting point the achievements of John F. Kennedy, along with those of his brother Robert Kennedy and of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

John F. Kennedy was murdered by those who clung to the old ways, the ways of violence and greed. He was killed by a conspiracy that was funded by right-wing oil tycoons and bankers from Texas, carried out by figures from the CIA and organized crime, protected from discovery by the FBI, aided on the scene by the Dallas police, and covered-up by the American political and media establishment. It was a crime that can only be avenged by those who carry on Kennedy's legacy, which is what we must do today.

When Kennedy was killed, the Money Power in America gained ascendancy and has ruled the nation by subterfuge and force since then. The Money Power has largely operated through the American banking system since the creation of the First Bank of the United States in the 1790s. This Bank was modeled on the Bank of England. Through the First Bank of the United States and the Bank of England, the U.S. and Great Britain committed the fatal error of turning over the sovereign prerogative of money creation to private bankers. Ever since, the bankers have used their privileges to concentrate wealth and subvert democracy. They are doing it today.

Creation of money is one of the most important functions of properly-constituted government. In the early 1800s, the Money Power was fended off by a series of presidents who were the forebears of today's Democratic Party - Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Jackson, and Van Buren. During the Civil War, the U.S. government, led by members of the House of Representatives, broke free from the Money Power by authorizing the direct issuance of currency by the federal government - the famous Greenbacks. The Greenbacks were not based on borrowing or taxation. They entered into circulation directly through government spending and served both to pay government obligations and as fuel for the national economy. They were a true American money, created and spent without borrowing and without going through the privately-owned banks.

But after the Civil War, the Money Power gradually took over, aided by the backing of British financiers, leading to the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913. The Federal Reserve is not a government agency. It is chartered by government, but is owned and operated by and for the private banking establishment. It is well known to economists that constriction of the currency by the Federal Reserve produced the Great Depression. Roosevelt fought the power of the banks and restored the economy during World War II. Kennedy was poised to restore and extend the role of the federal government in regulating and enhancing the productivity of the nation's economy when he was assassinated. All the presidents since Kennedy have been controlled by the Money Power or have vainly struggled against it. Again the Federal Reserve wrecked the American economy during the Volcker recession of 1979-83, when U.S. industry was devastated and the fateful shift occurred from an industrial to a "service" economy.

Today the bankers rule the United States. The standard of living of 80% of our men, women, and children has declined in the last generation. Working people are increasingly in debt. In fact, we are being led into virtual debt slavery. One of the mechanisms being used for this is usurious levels of compound interest on credit card debt, combined with proposals in Congress for more stringent bankruptcy laws.

Worse has happened with respect to other nations, especially the Third World, whose economies have been sacrificed to the predatory greed of the Money Power. This has been done through currency manipulation and the need by other nations to use the dollar as a reserve currency. For the last 20 years, the dollar has been "strong," which means that foreign products are cheap for U.S. consumers. The dollars that are shipped overseas to pay for these purchases come back to the U.S. as investments in the U.S. stock and bond markets, including Treasury securities.

But all this is changing. U.S. industrial production has collapsed. Our best industrial jobs have been shipped overseas to be carried out by people working as virtual slave laborers. Now the dollar is slipping, so we cannot purchase as many foreign products as before. Our markets are not so attractive as places for foreigners to invest, so the stock and bond markets are crashing. While this might provide an opportunity to restore our exports, our industrial capacity has been decimated, and we no longer have the ability we once had to produce for foreign markets. Meanwhile, our infrastructure has been neglected and has deteriorated disastrously. Our railroads, airlines, roads, bridges, schools, and power and water systems are in disarray or disrepair.

Which brings us to today. What has changed in the last few years has been the appearance on the world scene of a new currency, the Euro, which is starting to displace the dollar as a reserve currency in many countries. In particular, the Euro is replacing the dollar in such countries as North Korea, Iran, and Iraq, which not so coincidentally have been labeled by President Bush as an "axis of evil."

Iraq has replaced the dollar with the Euro as the denominator for purchase of its oil. The U.S. is afraid this will begin a slide in the dollar that will also involve the other oil-producing nations. It could lead to a collapse of the U.S. economy if the flight from U.S. markets continues. The key to resolving this situation, in the eyes of the Money Power and its servants in the White House and Pentagon, is Iraq, which is pivotal in the control of the Middle East. War against Iraq would also aid Israel in its geopolitical ambitions, which are supported and financed by interests in the U.S. who are closely tied to the Money Power.

The Iraq War, if it happens, would in fact be a currency war between the U.S. and Europe. This is leading to the ongoing collapse of NATO, with France, Germany, and Belgium opposing the U.S. war policy, also joined by Russia and China. Again, this is because the domestic U.S. economy has been so weakened that we rely on dollar-based foreign domination to stay afloat. It all goes back to the control of the U.S. economy, politics, and society by the Money Power.

The Iraq War has been in the works for several years. What brought it on so suddenly was the events of 9-11, which are providing the pretext. Here we must understand that 9-11 appears to have been created by the Money Power for exactly this purpose. The people who planned and carried out 9-11 were connected to the intelligence services of the U.S. and certain other nations. The leadership of the CIA, the FBI and the military evidently knew what was going on but did nothing to stop it. Al Qaeda operatives were recruited as foot soldiers, and the Al Qaeda network was exploited to create a financial trail, but the role of Osama bin Laden had to have been slight, if he had a role at all. Remember too that Al Qaeda was created by MI6 and the CIA to fight the Soviet Union in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

All these things must now change. A new phase in the assault against the U.S. Constitution by its domestic enemies is about to begin. President Bush is as much a victim of the Money Power as he is a perpetrator. He simply does not have the knowledge or background to know what to do, and he is surrounded by a cabal of truly nefarious characters who are constantly goading him into action. This cabal includes the present leadership of the Israeli government and the Likud Party.

But what may be programmed to come after Bush would be much worse. This is because the Money Power itself is being taken over by and is melding into what may be called a Political Crime Syndicate whose power straddles the three sectors of politics, finance, and organized crime. This syndicate deals in such areas as international money laundering, weapons trafficking, and drugs. It is this Political Crime Syndicate, working with Western intelligence agencies, that ran Iran-Contra during the Reagan years, has revived the Afghanistan drug trade, and that controls the U.S. trade in "ecstasy" and other "street" drugs. It is also the Political Crime Syndicate that continues to engage in targeted assassinations, including U.S. political figures.

The Political Crime Syndicate may be plotting to take over the U.S. presidency in 2004 and install one of its members in the nation's highest office. If this happens it would involve the Democratic Leadership Council and the Washington Post. Both are Trojan Horses for the Money Power within the Democratic Party, as was Rothschild agent August Belmont in the late 19th century and President Woodrow Wilson in the early 20th. But this potential coup d'etat, which would likely to lead to a Nazi-like regime in the U.S., followed perhaps by World War III, is not inevitable. These conditions may also provide an opportunity for progressive forces to strike back, provided they begin to lay the groundwork now.

On assuming power, the first step the progressive forces must take is to relieve the pressure from the collapsing domestic economy, because it is this pressure which is driving the Money Power insane, causing the Iraq War, and leading to the incessant push toward turning events over to the Political Crime Syndicate. Please believe me when I say that the economic crisis could be relieved within a matter of months by an act of Congress, followed by executive action through the U.S. Treasury Department, to nationalize the Federal Reserve and take control of the credit mechanisms of the national banking system. This would be followed by a measured program of release of money into the economy through a Greenback-like mechanism. This would mean direct creation of money by the federal government and its utilization in projects of social worth related to infrastructure restoration and other worthwhile social purposes, such as adequate national health care, Social Security, the space program, education, and technology research and development.

The knee-jerk objection to such a program is that it would be inflationary, but this is false. Throughout history, monetary policy has been inflationary only when money was created in excess of legitimate economic needs, or when the currency has been under attack, as the Continental currency was from British counterfeiting during the Revolutionary War. Inflation could be controlled by a Treasury Department adequately staffed by experts who would regulate the system. What is inflationary is actually unlimited creation of credit by the banks that is diverted into speculation in stocks, real estate, etc. This abuse of banking was what created the stock market bubble of the "Roaring 20s" and the dot.com and real estates bubbles of the 1990s. The dot.com bubble has burst and so will the real estate bubble.

Objections might also be raised to turning such regulatory and financial power over to the federal government. This argument is based on decades of propaganda coming from the Money Power and its media and academic shills. It is time to face the fact that control of money by private interests has totally failed in fulfilling the purposes of democracy. It is also time for Americans to remember that government in a republic is "us," not "them." It is the instrument by which the community may act to promote, preserve, and protect its shared human values. Since America began, these values have consistently been subverted by the Money Power. Please understand that within the ranks of the federal professional workforce, there are many dedicated, competent patriots who could implement the solutions which their political overseers fail to understand because they have been blinded by decades of right-wing antigovernment propaganda.

Once the monetary problem has been dealt with, all other reforms will follow as a matter of course, because the chief threat to the progress and evolution of American democracy will have been removed. And we won't need any more foreign currency wars either. Nor will we need the CIA, since the requirements for overthrowing other nations' governments, assassinating domestic and foreign political leaders, and financing overseas adventures with proceeds from drug and weapons trafficking will be gone. Legitimate intelligence duties could then be transferred to the appropriate accountable agencies. The CIA complex at Langley, Virginia, could be razed and replaced by something pleasant like a botanical garden. Similarly, we will no longer need a subversive and conspiratorial FBI. That institution can best be cleansed by opening its files to a thorough investigation of its role in the Kennedy and King assassinations and other misdeeds. As for the Defense Department, we would be able to restore the concept espoused by great military leaders such as MacArthur and Eisenhower, which is a force manned by citizen soldiers whose primary task is national defense, not foreign conquest.

All this can be done once we really start thinking about where we are going and how to get there. We can help ourselves get our heads straightened out by turning off the din from right-wing talk-radio psychopaths and fundamentalist preachers who seem to be longing for a conflagration to take place in someone else's part of the world that will justify their opinion of themselves as being among the "elect."

It is time to realize that what Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence is true. All men are created equal, and we are all endowed with inalienable rights - life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and others as well, including a place to live, food to eat, and a decent education. We are all God's children, every single living soul on earth, as well as those who have been here before and those who are to come. The idea that some people, and not all, are God's "chosen people," as espoused by such as John Calvin, the Illuminati and other cultists, certain Jewish bigots, and the British aristocracy is sociopathic, anti-democratic, and just plain wrong. It is time we start to realize this and put our beliefs and values into action. It is time for a New America. This paper has some feasible suggestions as to how to go about it.

Let's try. Let's make a start.
