A daring rescue operation had to be mounted to save SAS soldiers attacked as they dropped behind enemy lines in northern Iraq.

They came under fire when they were discovered during a mission to pinpoint Iraqi front-line positions for later destruction by US B52 bombers.

The SAS squad were forced to abandon their armoured Land-Rover near the town of Mosul, where Saddam's forces have retreated under heavy bombardment in recent days.

The unit called for assistance and a helicopter was swiftly dispatched to extract the men from the scene, the Ministry of Defence said.

Arab TV network Al Jazeera had claimed 10 SAS men were killed in fierce exchanges with Iraqi troops. The MoD refused to comment on any casualties.
