- Reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-il ordered female
dancers to strip at a lavish banquet, threw wild temper tantrums and ate
only the finest food despite his people dying of famine.
-
- A book written by one of his chefs has lifted the lid
on the bizarre goings on in the communist republic which is seen as a potential
nuclear flashpoint.
-
- Japanese sushi chef Kenji Fujimoto says Kim used to hold
huge Henry VIII style feasts that would go on all night - with exhausted
guests not allowed to leave until the self-style "Dear Leader"
went to bed.
-
- "His banquets often started at midnight and lasted
until morning," Fujimoto said. "As far as I knew, the longest
banquet lasted for four days."
-
- And at one such party, attended by North Korean government
bigwigs, Kim ordered dancing women hired in as entertainment to disrobe.
-
- Such is the absolute power wielded by the dictator that,
despite hesitating at first, the dancers "had no power to resist".
-
- Kim then insisted his male staff dance with the women
before adding: "You can dance with them, but if you touch them, you
will be arrested as thieves."
-
- And Mr Fujimoto writes how Kim had a taste for the finer
things in life.
-
- His former boss ate gourmet shark fin soup every week
and imported only the best food from around the globe.
-
- While he lived it up his people were gripped in the midst
of a killer famine that aid agencies say has starved around four-and-a-half
million North Koreans to death. Ordinary people in the cut-off republic
were witnessed eating tree bark, grass and insects to stay alive.
-
- And Kim, who took power when his dictator father Kim
il-Sung died in 1994, also owned a 10,000-bottle wine cellar, scores of
foreign sports cars and a personal cinema with thousands of movies.
-
- Mr Fujimoto returned to Japan two years ago and, since
the publication of his book, is thought to be a target for assassination.
