LaRouche Speaks For
America On Turkish Trip
6-22-3

Democratic Presidential pre-candidate Lyndon LaRouche visited the nation of Turkey from June 13-18, and gave that nation's elites a strong sense of optimism that U.S.-Turkish relations can be repaired, not through Ankara's capitulation to an imperial dictate, but through a fundamental shift inside the U.S. which is being spearheaded by LaRouche's campaign.

The fact that LaRouche was invited to Turkey, for this high-profile trip, must be seen in the context of the arrogant demands coming from Undersecretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, that the nation "apologize" for not having supported the U.S. in its war against Iraq. Asked specifically about this demand, LaRouche said, "I don't think Turkey has to say anything. ... What Wolfowitz did was shameful, an embarrassment to the United States." He was greeted by enthusiastic applause.

The leading Democrat and his wife, Helga Zepp-LaRouche, were invited to Turkey by Yarin ("Tomorrow"), an independent monthly publication, read by policymakers and intellectuals; it has a strong orientation to Eurasian development, and has hosted writings by LaRouche over the past year and a half. Burhan Metin and A. Altay Unaltay, of Yarin's editorial board, organized a major conference in Istanbul on June 14, co-sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Department of the Istanbul Municipality, on the theme "Eurasia: New Key for Global Development and Peace," and another, on the same theme, hosted by the Ankara Chamber of Commerce, in the capital on June 16. LaRouche was the keynote speaker at both events.

Among the 700 people attending the two events, were government ministers, members of Parliament, intellectuals, professors and students, and representatives of the media. In addition, LaRouche addressed the national press in a number of press conferences, and personal interviews, organized by Yarin, which generated widespread press coverage, for the duration of his stay, and afterward.

One of the highlights of LaRouche's trip was the Ankara Chamber of Commerce's presentation to him of a gold Ataturk medal. Similar gestures of respect were made in a number of private discussions LaRouche conducted with leading senior military figures and political figures. Among them were former Prime Minister Ecmettin Erbakan, who was in office in 1996-97, former President Suleyman Demirel (1993-2000), Members of Parliament from the governing AKP party, leaders of the PPI, and others.

LaRouche national campaign spokesperson Debra Hanania Freeman announced that the Campaign is sponsoring "the first real substantive discussion of the Democratic Presidential campaign" when Mr. LaRouche will participate in a webcast originating in Washington, DC. beginning at 1pm EDT on July 2nd. She reported that Lyndon LaRouche has extended an invitation to his fellow Democratic Presidential pre-candidates to join him in the webcast discussion on the subject "What is the relevance of FDR'S policy for today's world?"
