Four Letters To The
Editor About Fluoride
From Linn Ciesla

From The Spectrum, Utah:

A June 25 letter to the editor claimed that we need to encourage fluoride being added to our water supply because it strengthens bones and teeth.

Let us ignore for the moment any alleged benefit that general fluoridation may have.

Let us ignore the idea of adding a neurotoxin to our water.

Let us ignore the fact that sodium fluoride is the usual additive while calcium fluoride is the substance that is claimed to have some dental benefits.

Let us ignore the related health hazards associated with ingesting fluorides which may include osteoporosis, ADD, Alzheimer's, hip fractures, fluorosis, etc. Let us ignore individual physiology and health.

Let us instead speak of freedom.

Let us speak of taking control of our own lives, our own health and our own behavior.

Let us not seek the force of government to solve minor individual problems.

If you want fluoride in your water, then add a spoonful to each cup, but leave my water alone.

If the writer "knew" the benefits, then she has no doubt used a fluoridated treatment on her teeth daily.

May we stand up in all times and in all places against those that would remove liberty. May the Lord help us do battle against the meddlers, do-gooders and busy bodies that wish to control other's behavior and not their own.

Worries about the safety of fluoride
From Dr Alan B. Shrank

Sir, It is truly amazing that in the 21st century fluoridation of the public water supplies is still an issue (letter, July 8). Throughout Europe fluoridation schemes have been abandoned because of the proven failure to prevent dental decay in children. Basle in Switzerland had a scheme for 43 years which ceased only this year because it was ineffective and added another pollutant to the Rhine.

The original research conducted by Trendley Dean in the US in the 1930s and 40s, and the Ministry of Health trials in the UK in the 1940s would not stand up to the scientific scrutiny expected by today,s scientists, so why should we all be treated with added fluoride in our drinking water just because a few families refuse to use toothpaste to clean their teeth?

Yours sincerely,
ALAN B. SHRANK,

From Dr N. C. Lee

Sir, Most people are aware that fluoride has a protective effect against dental caries, and many of them already use fluoride toothpastes. What they strongly object to is having any more chemicals added to their drinking water.

The health chiefs would be far better occupied in reviving the present grossly inadequate NHS dental service so that everyone can have regular, free, six-monthly dental check-ups without recourse to the private sector. They should also be educating mothers and their children about the soft drinks and sugary confections that actually cause dental caries, rather than pushing for this blanket pollution of our water supplies with a potentially toxic chemical.

Yours sincerely,
N. C. LEE,

From Mr Gwyn Harrison

Sir, If fluoride is completely safe, why does the tube of fluoride toothpaste I have before me warn that children under seven should only be given a "pea-sized amount, that brushing should be under supervision to minimise swallowing, and that a dentist should be consulted if other fluoride supplements are being used?

Yours faithfully,
GWYN HARRISON,
19 Gwel Eryri, Llandegfan,
Porthaethwy, Gwynedd LL59 5RD.
