Ken Mitchell accidentally caught this remarkable footage of a cylindrical UFO glimmering in the sun as it rises. The strange object leaves absolutely no vapor trail or exhaust whatsoever as it rapidly ascends silently out of sight into the rolling clouds above. The object appears to have two main sections, perhaps egg-shaped, but some video distortion may be contributing to this effect, as well as the intense sunlight glinting off its polished surface. One thing is of no doubt, it's no rocket!

Ken's info: Shot by accident Farmington Hills, Michigan. Early Sept, 1999. About 6:30 pm. Sony Digital 8, focused to infinity, locked down camera on tripod, Zoomed to full 10x. Clouds were at 5 to 8 thousand ft. Windy.

The Image and MPEG Video below was submitted by Brian Bessent
and shows a very similar craft also caught on tape with similar look and movement|

Jeff,

I suspect that the video linked at the top of the article is a fake, although rather good one. No one pans a camera that smoothly, especially when zoomed in at 10x. With one exception, the clouds do not appear to be moving relative to each other and this causes me to believe that the clouds are likely to be a still image. The one moving cloud appears to have been added to compensate for this lack of motion - small fuzzy spot right of center moving towards the center. Teh object disappearing behind the cloud fades out rather smoothly suggesting the use of an alpha channel with a rather smooth ramp and remains visible after it would have been obscured by the cloud. Regular video also produces scanline artifacts on moving objects and none are visible.

This would be easy to produce using Adobe After Effects or any good animation software - certainly much more likely than zooming in all the way and tracking a moving object in the sky. Put a camera on a tripod and see how easy it is to find and track an airplane in the sky if you would like to prove to yourself how unlikely this clip is.

I do Photoshop, video and Maya 3D modeling and animation and have produced similar work but I don't pass it off as the real thing.

Well done effort though and my congratulations to the artist.

As for the video linked at the bottom, it is what I would expect from the real thing or at least from an exceptional artist. I have no opinion concerning Brian Bessent's video clip one way or the other except that it is certainly more interesting than Ken Mitchell's.

Ken's response:

I think the gentleman thinks too much. As I said in my letter to you, this was shot with a locked down camera when I was shooting what we call in the business "running shots of clouds" to use as backgrounds for titles. I did not see it with my eyes I only saw something in the viewfinder. I think it would have been too small to see with the naked eye. It was shot just by chance. No motivation to fake it since I work at a video facility and that is the first thing people would question. I just happened to submit it because my friends including discreet flame, Quantel EQ and Henry editors, and our aftereffects and 3d operators all wanted copies. They believe me. I have the original digital 8 tape to prove it. If the gentleman would be willing to pay for a lie detector test I would be glad to take one to prove him wrong. Any other questions let me know.....
