- A report on growing GM crops in Britain commercially
is expected to say it would be a waste of time.
-
- The study is one of three commissioned by the Government
into the viability of developing so-called 'Frankenstein Food'.
-
-
- It looked at the impacts of GM food on farmers, processors,
retailers and consumers.
-
- It also examined the environmental impacts, the biotechnology
industry and developing countries.
-
- The Strategy Unit report has been welcomed by the Soil
Association, which is strongly opposed to GM crops.
-
- Policy manager Gundula Azeez, said: "The Government
has been wrong to support the introduction of GM crops on the basis that
they will bring economic benefits.
-
- "GM food has already been rejected by all the major
supermarkets, most large food manufacturers and the public."
-
- He added: "We should heed the warning from the US,
where GM crops have been grown for the last seven years.
-
- "Unforeseen collapses in trade and product recalls
are estimated to have cost at least £8bn since 1999."
-
- Mr Azeez said a decision not to grow GM crops commercially
would give a boost to organic farming.
