Key US Army Division To
Remain In Iraq Indefinitely

7-15-3

(VOA News) -- Thousands of American soldiers who were expecting to go home from Iraq soon have now been told they will stay in the country indefinitely.

U.S. Army officials say about nine-thousand soldiers from the American Third Infantry Division will have to stay in place because of continuing attacks against U.S. forces.

The division was the first American unit to enter Baghdad during the war to topple the Saddam Hussein regime. At least 36 soldiers from the unit have been killed in Iraq, more than any other U.S. military division during the war.

Morale in the unit is said to be low. Reuters news agency quotes one member of the division, Sergeant Chris Grisham, as saying the soldiers had been told three times they would be going home soon.

Meanwhile, Iraq's new Governing Council has reportedly decided to set up a commission to try Iraqi war criminals. Word of the tribunal comes from a spokesman for the Iraqi National Congress, whose leader Ahamad Chalabi is a member of the council.

The council of 25 Iraqis was established Sunday after weeks of negotiations between U.S. officials, Western diplomats and Iraqi political leaders. The council says it will send a delegation to the United Nations to show it is the legitimate Iraqi authority during the country's transition to democracy.

However, several prominent Iraqi groups have criticized the council because its members were not elected and because it must consult with the U.S.-led administration on all important issues.
