US Patrol Attacked
North Of Baghdad

8-16-03

BAQUBA, Iraq (AFP) -- A US army vehicle was destroyed early today when an American patrol hit mines at a village near the town of Baquba, 65 kilometres northeast of Baghdad, an eyewitness said.

The village of Abara was sealed off after the attack, in which four mines exploded, at about 1am (7am AEST), said the witness who requested anonymity.

An American helicopter fired two missiles at a nearby farm and US troops were conducting house-to-house searches, he said.

There were no reports of casualties.

Baquba is home to both Sunni and Shiite Muslims, and has been a regular battleground between US troops and guerrilla insurgents believed to be linked to ousted dictator Saddam Hussein.

The US army said it could not immediately confirm the incident.
