- (DPA) -- German army vehicles from World War II, containing
human skeletons, have been found by Croatian officials in the Danube river
after a drought caused a huge fall in water levels.
-
- The vehicles, including a tank, two jeeps and a lorry,
were found close to the eastern Croat village of Batina on Monday.
-
- Croatian police experts have arrived at the site to protect
the scene from curious villagers.
-
- Stjepan Kocis, deputy mayor of Batina, said it was "very
important to get the vehicles out of the river as soon as possible, because
there are still liquid explosives in them, as well as human skeletons".
-
- He also said that documents had been found in the vehicles,
"which would make the identification of the skeletons a lot easier".
-
- It is believed that the vehicles were destroyed during
a battle with the Soviet Red Army at the end of the war.
-
- Local officials said they had informed the Russian Ambassador
in Zagreb Andrej Ivankov about the findings.
