- The common virus spread to Jake Shelvey's brain causing
an infection, a postmortem revealed.
-
- He was normally healthy but had told his mum he felt
slightly ill that day.
-
- Head teacher Jonathan Oddy said Jake was helping set
up a running track on a playing field when he "dropped to the floor"
at 10.30am on September 16.
-
- Devastated friends said he had seemed fine before the
class at Barstable School, Basildon, Essex. He was taken to Basildon General
Hospital but later died.
-
- The Royal College of GPs' flu unit said: "This is
extremely rare. There is only a remote chance of a common cold resulting
in death."
-
- But colds can trigger viral bodies which can fatally
inflame the brain, a spokesman added.
