Was It The Voice Of
Oliver Cromwell?

12-5-3

Ghosthunters may have had a spiritual encounter with Oliver Cromwell when they targeted his former home.

Medium Marjory Kite found plenty of ghostly goings-on at Ely's tourist information centre and the museum in Oliver Cromwell's House - once the home of the Lord Protector - and may have found the man himself.

While in the writing room of the St Mary's Street building, she suddenly adopted a man's voice and said: "How can you fight the establishment? The poor people never stood a chance. That's what made me fight the fight to release them from bondage.

"In this day you can think and act as you wish, in my day if you did not believe and attend church you were an outcast.

"The house was very important to me. My family were very important to me. Unfortunately I did not give them my time."

Ghosthunters, The Cambridge Paranormal Society, returning to the house for the second time, believe this could have been the voice of Cromwell.

"Everyone felt the room was cold," said society member, Paul Brown. "Even on the first investigation we found this room cold even though the heating was on and had been fixed a couple of weeks earlier.

"Was this Oliver Cromwell himself? What was interesting was that the medium took on the voice without straining and she did not hesitate at all throughout the statement."

Marjory said she could feel the presence of a little girl and there was a special relationship between her and the man. Later Oliver Cromwell House manager, Alison Balmforth confirmed that, unknown to most people, Oliver Cromwell was close to his youngest daughter and they spent a great deal of time together.

"It wasn't scary," said Alison. "It was quite comforting to know that Oliver was pleased we were there. When the medium came to the house she didn't know it had been Oliver Cromwell's home and I don't think many people would know about his favourite youngest daughter."

Marjory asked if papers had been found in a fireplace and, in fact, papers were found behind a panelled wall around 100 years ago.

During her tour of the house she claimed she picked up the presence of a monk wearing a heavy, grey woollen habit in the kitchen.

In the parlour she saw a different man with a red-coloured beard who was short and stocky wearing long robes like a monk. But he was not a monk because underneath the robes he was wearing a uniform, Marjory said. She felt someone was hiding there and very afraid.

Marjory could also see a big table with eight men sitting round it and heard the name John Spencer. A lot of planning went on in the parlour, she said.

Other rooms in the house yielded their own secrets including the feeling that the shop had been used as a courtroom at one time.

Now members of the Cambridge Paranormal Society are going to check out and try to verify Marjory's findings. For more information visit their website at www.cambridgeparanormal.co.uk.
