A Ghostly Hot Spot

A Team of paranormal investigators claim a South Cheshire town is home to more ghosts, ghouls and apparitions than anywhere else in the country. The ancient town of Sandbach has been described as a "paranormal hotspot" and a "centre of psychic energy" by the experts from Ghost Haunted North East, based near Cleveland.

A team of ghost hunters accompanied by a medium visited the town to investigate spooky goings on at the Old Hall Hotel.

Gordon Teasdale, chairman and chief investigator, said: "We were amazed by the level of paranormal activity in Sandbach. Not only was the hotel haunted, the whole town was very exciting.

"It's because of its great age and the things that have happened there in the past.

"We came down to investigate the Old Hall Hotel, and we found evidence of 14 different apparitions.

"Our medium started picking up on vibrations a couple of weeks before we even came to town. When he arrived the first thing he did was race across the road to St Mary's Church, where he uncovered the gravestone of a woman who apparently used the tunnel from the church to the hotel for her work as a 'lady of the night' hundreds of years ago."

The spooky hotel was featured on television recently as one of the most haunted places to stay in the country.

The building dates back more than 600 years. Owner Sue Hall said: "It was originally built in the 14th century, but burned down and it was then rebuilt in the 16th century for Sir John Radcliffe, who can still be found prowling the corridors."

Sue claims she has seen Sir John herself on three separate occasions. She said: " At the last count there were 14 different apparitions discovered here, including Sir John, a lady dressed in a beekeeper's outfit, and a large number of poltergeists.

"Shadowy figures are seen and things have been known to fly across the room. Furniture moves, doors open and close and cutlery drawers are rearranged. But it's not frightening, they seem happy to live alongside us."

Ghostly apparitions and strange findings were also uncovered at Scotch Common, the site of a famous battle in 1651, when a band of bloodthirsty Scotsmen returning from battle in Worcester descended on Sandbach. But the marauding invaders were driven out by the people of the town and scores of Scottish troops lost their lives.

The Lower Chequer Inn, built about 1570 and reputed to be the oldest building in the town, is home to another ghostly presence, known simply as 'You'.

Mr Teasdale said: "The Old Hall Hotel, and in fact Sandbach as a whole, is probably the most haunted place we have visited."

The group, which is dedicated to investigating supernatural activity and has worked all over the North of England, is planning a return trip to the town this summer to carry out further investigations into the unknown.
