- NAIROBI -- Axe-wielding intruders
hacked to death an elderly British farmer and seriously injured his wife
after they burst into the couple's home in the Kenyan highlands.
-
- The men forced their way through the living-room window
bars of Charlie and Ann Stone-Wigg's home in the white farming area of
Gilgil, about 80 miles west of the capital Nairobi.
-
- They savagely set upon the couple, both in their seventies
and originally from Scotland, with axes and machetes as they cowered in
bed.
-
- Simon Kiragu, the region's deputy police commander, said:
"Mr Stone-Wigg had been slashed and beaten all over his body.
-
- "But we think he died after a sharp object was driven
through his head."
-
- Mrs Stone-Wigg, 71, was taken to hospital in Nairobi
in a coma. Police said she had suffered multiple wounds and that one of
her ears had been slashed off.
-
- Three men, including the Stone-Wiggs' main cattle herder,
have been arrested after they were tracked down by police with dogs.
-
- Friends of the couple, who moved to Kenya in the 1960s,
said Mr Stone-Wigg, 74, had been involved in a dispute with the foreman,
whose identity has not yet been disclosed.
-
- Police described the incident as a "grudge attack".
Although extensive damage was done to the house, investigating officers
said nothing appeared to have been stolen.
