- This astonishing hypocrisy should set the world howling
with laughter...and disgust. Never mind the Zionist occupation/annexation
of the Syrian Golan Heights, pay no attention to the de facto occupation
of the West Bank, and Gaza lands...never mind zionists are currently occupying/annexing
even more Palestinian land via Sharon's racist, apartheid wall...let's
get those terrible Syrians out of Lebanon.

- JERUSALEM (AFP) -- Israeli
Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom called on the international community to
put an end to the "Syrian occupation" of Lebanon.

- "Since 1976, Syria has been occupying Lebanon and
stealing its resources and it is time for the world to order it to leave,"
Shalom told the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday.

- He called on "the countries of the free world to
start a diplomatic campaign" to force a withdrawal of Syrian troops
from Lebanon and said he had raised the issue with UN Secretary General
Kofi Annan.

- His comments came just days after Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon threatened Hezbollah with an unprecedented response if the Lebanese
Shiite militia, which is backed by Syria and Iran, took any renewed action
against Israel.

- He was specifically referring to threats by Hezbollah
to kidnap more Israeli soldiers in the wake of a German-brokered prisoner
swap on Thursday.

- Israel freed hundreds of Palestinians and Arab prisoners
in exchange for an Israeli businessman and the bodies of three of its soldiers.

- Sharon has practically ruled out a renewal of peace talks
with Syria.

- He told the cabinet two weeks ago that new talks would
ultimately force an Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Golan Heights,
a strategic plateau seized from Syria in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and
unilaterally annexed 14 years later.

- The controversy over Syrian presence in Lebanon came
to the fore following Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May
2000 after a guerrilla campaign spearheaded by Hezbollah.
