Mexican workers living in the US sent to relatives in Mexico a record $13.27 billion in 2003, 35 percent more than in 2002, Dow Jones reported.

Mexico's central bank said the transfers last year beat foreign direct investment, which reached a seven-year low of $11 billion in 2003.

More than 20 million people of Mexican origin live in the US. Only half of them are estimated to have a bank account. Around 5 million are thought to be working in the US without legal status. Mexico's economy is expected to have grown by 1.2 percent in 2003.
