FALLUJAH, Iraq -- Four people, including a two-year-old child, were killed and eight wounded in fighting Friday between US troops and insurgents in this restive town west of Baghdad, hospital officials said.

"Four people have been killed. They are all males and include a two-year-old child, and seven people, also males, were wounded," Doctor Ahmed Shaker Kadduri said.

Hospital director Hatem Samir earlier reported four deaths without giving details and said two people were hurt in the fighting that erupted at mid-morning and spread to the early afternoon.

An Iraqi cameraman reportedly working for American network ABC was severely wounded, a doctor said.

"ABC News cameraman Burhan Mohammed al-Luhaybi was severely wounded in the head in the clashes," said Omar al-Ani, a doctor at the Fallujah hospital.

"He is in very serious condition," he said.

ABC News in Baghdad would not confirm the incident or whether Luhaybi worked for the American network.

Iraqi reporters said that Luhaybi was a freelance cameraman for ABC News in Fallujah.

Gunshots and explosions rocked the town where masked insurgents, armed with mortars, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and assault rifles, were seen in the streets, an AFP correspondent on the scene said.

The shooting occurred at the eastern entrance to the town which, remained blocked by advancing US troops, he added.

There was no immediate confirmation from the US military.

On Thursday, a US Marine was killed and two wounded when their convoy was attacked by bombs and gunfire east of Fallujah.

Fallujah is about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the Iraqi capital and lies in the so-called Sunni Triangle where US forces regularly come under fire.
