- China has suspended its human rights dialogue with the
United States Tuesday following Washington's decision to seek a resolution
condemning its human rights record at a key UN meeting in Geneva.
-
- "The confrontation incited by the American side
has damaged the foundation for the human rights dialogue and exchanges
between the two countries," Assistant Foreign Minister Shen Guofang
said in a foreign ministry statement.
-
- "The Chinese side must immediately halt the human
rights dialogue and exchanges. The American side should be held responsible
for all consequences that are caused."
-
- The United States announced Monday it would seek a resolution
condemning China for alleged human rights abuses and accused Beijing of
not living up to its international commitments to protect the rights of
its citizens.
-
- The US ambassador to Beijing, Clark T. Randt, was summoned
earlier Tuesday for a dressing down by Shen.
-
- Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Kong Quan slammed
the US decision in a statement, calling it "serious interference in
China's internal affairs."
-
- "The Chinese government and people express their
strong dissatisfaction and staunch opposition to this," Kong said
in a statement.
