- British contractor Gary Teeley, seized by anti-occupation
forces in the southern Iraqi city of Nassiriya last week, was handed over
to U.S. occupation forces.
-
- "We can confirm Mr Teeley has been released and
is safe and well with coalition forces," the spokesman said.
-
- "He is in the hands of the coalition forces,"
the spokesman added, but was unable to give Teeley's exact location.
-
- The Foreign Office had said on Friday that Teeley appeared
to have been abducted. He went missing in Nasiriyah on Monday.
-
- Qatar's Al-Jazeera satellite channel reported that Teeley
had been freed and turned over to coalition authorities who moved him to
a military base.
-
-
- Teeley was freed "with the help of Arab tribes in
the region," the news channel added, citing its correspondent in the
area.
-
- Teeley, 37, was described as a civilian consultant for
a dye works. Unconfirmed reports said he might have been abducted as he
and colleagues left a US air force base where they worked.
-
- He is one of several foreigners taken hostage in Iraq
over the past week, notably three Japanese civilians whose captors are
reportedly still threatening to execute them unless Japan pulls its troops
out of the war.
