- A 14-year-old Palestinian boy was killed and a 15-year-old
girl was wounded by Israel Defense Forces troops in separate incidents
in the Gaza Strip on Monday, Palestinian sources said.
-
- Late Monday, two Palestinians were killed near the Mughazi
refugee camp in central Gaza. Initial reports say a rocket they were setting
upexploded prematurely. Palestinian security officials said there was an
explosion followed by machine-gun fire. The IDF said it had no forces in
the area.
-
- In addition, Palestinians fired a mortar shell at the
Gaza Strip settlement of Netzarim, Israeli media reported; there were no
injuries.
-
- The 14-year-old Palestinian boy, meanwhile, was killed
after climbing sand dunes with several other youths to watch soldiers deployed
around the northern Gaza settlement of Nisanit, Palestinians said. Witnesses
and Palestinian security officials said the boys were about 700 meters
from an Israeli watchtower when the teen was killed.
-
- IDF officials said soldiers used non-lethal means to
disperse stone-throwers near a settlement and did not know about a boy
who was shot.
-
- Palestinian medical workers also said a 15-year-old mentally
handicapped girl had been shot and moderately wounded after approaching
the southern Gaza Strip settlement of Morag.
-
- The military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity,
said soldiers saw a woman running toward the settlement in a place where
Palestinians are not allowed to be, assumed she was attacking the settlement
and opened fire. They said Morag has been a frequent target of Palestinian
militants.
-
- Meanwhile, Border Policeman Corporal Yaniv Mashiah, 20,
who was killed by Palestinian gunfire in the West Bank on Sunday night,
was buried Monday afternoon in Holon.
-
- The shots hit Mashiah's vehicle near the West Bank city
of Hebron, barely an hour after a siren was sounded throughout the country
for one minute at 8 P.M. to mark the start of Memorial Day for Israel's
fallen soldiers. The Jaffa resident was killed and three others were lightly
wounded.
-
- The attack was later claimed by the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades,
who said they were avenging the assassination of Hamas leader Abdel Aziz
Rantisi.
-
- At 10:30 P.M. Sunday, a Bedouin citizen working as a
guard was seriously wounded after being shot in the Migdal Oz settlement,
which is located in the Gush Etzion bloc in the West Bank. The Al-Aqsa
Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the shooting, though an IDF
source said the incident was apparently not a terror attack, Israel Radio
reported.
-
- Forces on high alert Security forces were on high alert
for possible terror attacks planned for Monday's Memorial Day ceremonies
and the start of Independence Day Monday evening, assuming that all the
terrorist organizations - but particularly the Hamas cell in Gaza and the
Fatah cell in Nablus - would love to carry out an attack during the holiday.
-
- Intelligence information indicates that Hamas has prepared
several attacks in the Gaza Strip, and is also trying to get a terrorist
from the Strip into Israel.
