- BAGHDAD (AFP) - Eight US
soldiers were killed and four wounded by a car bomb blast near Mahmudiyah,
35 kilometres (20 miles) south of Baghdad.
-
- "Today at 11:30 am, coalition forces were operating
in the vicinity of Mahmudiyah when they were attacked by a car bomb,"
a military spokesman said Thursday.
-
- "Eight soldiers were killed and four wounded."
-
- The soldiers had been moving through the area when the
car exploded, he said.
-
- The four wounded soldiers were taken to hospital and
troops secured the area.
-
- No further information was immediately available on the
latest of a string of attacks by insurgents which have killed over 120
US troops in April alone, more than during the six weeks of "major
combat" with Saddam Hussein's forces.
-
- The blast came on top of the deaths of two US soldiers
in attacks in Baghdad and northeast of the capital on Thursday.
-
- One soldier died in a rocket-propelled grenade attack
in eastern Baghdad, while another soldier died and one was wounded in a
roadside bombing in Baquba.
-
- According to Pentagon figures it would take the US military
death toll to at least 731 since the war in Iraq began in March last year,
some 530 of them in combat.
