Golden propaganda

What a coincidence...

We just happen to be on the verge of a financial meltdown caused by insane government abuses of the currency printing presses and Osama bin Laden - that convenient arch villain who no one really wants to catch - is offering to pay assassins in gold for taking out his enemies.

Those Al Queda guys sure have a thing for gold, don't they?

In case you didn't know that, the media will remind you from time to time:

(Gold must be bad if Al Queda deals in it, right? Gee, that means anybody dealing on gold is kind of suspect, don't you think?)

What jumped out at me was not just that gold was being offered as a reward, but that the reward was stated in 'grams' of gold, not the normal and coined-sized denomination, the ounce.

Maybe it was just some good old fashioned Madison Avenue positioning on Osama's part. After all, 10,000 grams somehow sounds better than 320 ounces.

But there may be another reason for the grams.

A clever company has taken it upon themselves to create an easy way to buy and sell products electronically not in dollars, but in gold.

The concept is simplicity itself. You convert your rapidly devaluating dollars into gold *grams* - and it's available to you to make payments to people around the world who are happy and willing to be paid in gold and not green toilet paper... I mean US currency.

The idea is catching on and even has won the endorsement of straightlaced folks like Barron's, the weekly financial tabloid.

Question: What happens when people realize en masse that Bush & Co. (and all his predecessors) in order to be able to pose as the Great White Father have been running the printing presses 24/7 thereby setting us up for a major and painful devaluation of the cash in our pockets, bank accounts, pension funds etc.

The smart ones will start buying gold.

It used to be that simply ridiculing gold in the media and beating it down in the derivatives markets was enough to keep people away from it.

Today, it looks like in addition to helping justify every conceivable Bush atrocity imaginable, old Osama - (former) friend of the CIA and scion of a family with decade long close ties to the Bush family - has volunteered to lend his protean PR talents to the 'gold is bad' campaign, with a special jab at the avant-garde folks who deal in grams. Bad, bad, very bad...

For the record, 10,000 grams of gold is currently worth about $125,000. My guess is 10,000 grams of gold will be worth a whole lot more than that in months and years to come... at which point it might become necessary - again - for the US government to take the evil metal off the hands of upstanding US citizens.

Don't laugh. It's happened before and not that long ago...

"On April 5, 1933, Roosevelt commanded all citizens to surrender their gold to the government. No citizen was permitted to own more than $100 in gold coins, except for rare coins with special value for collectors."

In fact, US citizens were prohibited from owning gold until 1974 - just as they are prohibited from visiting places like Cuba and saying unflattering things about Israel.

America - land of the place where you're free... to do what you're told.

Bush and his evangelical kook friends must be on their knees every night thanking their God for Osama every day. After all, where would they be without him?
