- Two US soldiers and an Iraqi civilian have died following
an explosion in an Iraqi town north of Baghdad.
-
- The bomb detonated as US occupation forces were patrolling
Baquba, 65km north of the capital, on Thursday.
-
- Witnesses said there were numerous American casualties,
but could not say how many of the troops were dead or injured. Although
a security official confirmed the blast, the US military has declined to
comment on the incident.
-
- Some 726 US soldiers have died in Iraq since March 2003,
with just under 4000 reported injured.
-
- Two more explosions were also heard on Thursday near
the camp housing Japanese troops in the southern Iraqi city of Samawa.
Both attacks occurred around 02:00 (11:00 GMT), but no injuries have yet
been reported.
-
- Growing resistance
-
- With occupation forces involved in fierce fighting in
Falluja and Najaf and suffering repeated attacks in the capital, Washington
has rushed more tanks and other armoured vehicles to Iraq.
-
- Requests from commanders for more equipment came in the
bloodiest month for American troops since former president Saddam Hussein
was removed from power.
-
- US Marine Corps Major General John Sattler told Aljazeera
that the new equipment would arrive within days.
-
- US congressional committees have been forced to provide
the Pentagon with up to $50 billion in emergency money for military operations
in Iraq before the election.
-
- Bush had hoped he would not need more money before the
2 November election, but the surge in resistance against the occupation
has forced the administration to reconsider.
