- BAGHDAD (AFP) -- Two US soldiers
were killed and more than 20 wounded in a rocket attack in the city of
Balad, 75 kilometres (45 miles) north of the Iraqi capital, the US military
said.
-
- "Twenty-three people were injured as a result of
a rocket attack here at approximately 1 pm (0900 GMT) today. Two injured,
who were soldiers, died of their wounds," the military said in a statement
Wednesday.
-
- The statement did not specify if all the casualties were
coalition soldiers.
-
- The deaths raise to 612 the number of US soldiers killed
in action since the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003, according to
numbers from the Pentagon.
-
- All the wounded were evacuated to US military medical
facilities.
-
- A US soldier last died on Sunday in a bomb attack in
Taji, 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of Baghdad.
-
- Balad falls within the so-called Sunni triangle, north
and west of Baghdad, home to the Sunni Muslim community which held the
reins of power in Iraq from the modern state's founding in 1921 until last
year's US-led invasion.
