- BAGHDAD - A senior Iraqi Defense Ministry official
has been assassinated near his home in southern Baghdad, in the latest
of a string of attacks on Iraqi officials, a ministry spokesman said on
Monday.

- He told Reuters Issam Jassem Qassim, a director general
in the ministry, was killed by three gunmen at around 10 p.m. on Sunday.

- "He was assassinated by three gunmen,"
the spokesman said.

- Militants have attacked or killed several senior
Iraqi officials for cooperating with U.S.-led forces in the country.

- Last week, a senior official from the Industry and
Minerals Ministry was shot dead as he was leaving his home. On Saturday,
the justice minister's convoy was attacked by a suicide car bomb. The minister
escaped but five bodyguards were killed.
