- TOKYO -- The strange odyssey
of the alleged Cold War deserter Charles Jenkins appeared to have ended
yesterday as he arrived in Tokyo with his family amid clear signals that
on compassionate grounds the United States will not seek his extradition.
-
- Mr Jenkins, a 64-year-old former GI, was wanted for allegedly
crossing over to North Korea in 1965. He lived there for almost 40 years,
working as a propagandist and an English teacher. Washington has indicated
that it will not seek his arrest because he is ill.
-
- He was taken to hospital after arriving with his Japanese
wife, whom he met when she was abducted by North Korea, and two daughters.
