The End Of The World...Again

And there, there overhead, there, there hung over
Those thousands of white faces, those dazed eyes,
There in the starless dark, the poise, the hover,
There with vast wings across the cancelled skies,
There in the sudden blackness the black pall
Of nothing, nothing, nothing -- nothing at all.

-- Archibald MacLeish, The End of the World

I've been waiting for this moment, for all my life...Oh Lord,
I can feel it coming in the air tonight...Oh Lord

--Phil Collins, In the Air Tonight

Part I

The future and the past exist only as concepts in our minds. The future never gets here, the past is never retrieved. We have the eternal Present moment which existed "before" time, and will remain "after" its "end." The Present gives birth to all things that are real; it is the "place" where you reside in the deepest moments of stillness and bliss. There is no desire to acquire something in the future, no desperate need to undo a mistake from the past. In the Present, everything is perfect, because the mind perceives things as they truly ARE.

Children embrace this reality without any conceptualization. Unlike adults, they do not place conditions on their happiness, awaiting future rewards before they can "feel good." Quite unconsciously, they say to themselves, "This Present moment is more than enough, thank you very much. Why waste time awaiting something that will never get here, when everything I need is available now?"

Don't we all seek to re-acquire this effortless ability to surrender to the Present? Nirvana, enlightenment, rapture, ecstasy...it has many names, all of which describe the same spiritual state. It is simply a recognition that God is not capable of making mistakes; that He has made the Present moment perfect and incorruptible.

As a child, like every other child, I did not value futurity, because I didn't believe in it. I was sure that if the future miraculously DID one day arrive, I would not be around to see it. I thought of death constantly throughout childhood. I spoke of Heaven and the afterlife as casually as most children speak of GI Joe toys and video games. Of course, I did have some tangible reasons for this belief. I spent childhood immersed in Cold War "paranoia"; I watched movies like "Threads" and "The Day After" with my heart in my throat and tears in my eyes. Nuclear War was worse than a boogeyman; it was the personification of all Evil in the Universe. If it ever happened, so I reasoned, it would not only mean the destruction of the world, but it would act as a direct confirmation of God's insanity. Surely, no "rational" or benevolent Father would see his Creation destroyed in a senseless act of human dumbfuckery.

Around the age of 14, my belief in the End of the World turned into something more complex. I was training for a marathon, running for hours a day, and the endorphins and dopamine in my brain seemed to open up a channel to something huge and important. I began having "dreams" that cannot be called dreams; they were more like epic movie trailers for a definitive future Event. In these "dreams," I gazed upon the heavens, and saw things that only exist in fairytales and legends - things that should not be spoken of, lest they might overhear. I saw colossal Giants - one-eyed, fire-breathing, thundering and screaming - burning in the sky with uncontrolled fury. They had returned to their former domain with their companions, the fiends of darkness, and they were set to wage war with their counterbalance, the Ships of Light. A "battle" ensued that was less a battle than a magnificent drama, a play of such grandeur that it echoes throughout all of history, since "before" the beginning of time, to "after" its inevitable end.

My first thought upon witnessing this event was, "I know this. I've seen this before. How could I have forgotten? It is important that I remember, that I recognize the signs before it happens again. And it WILL happen again...Is it just around the corner? I think it might be."

Part II

Albert Einstein once asked the question, "Is the Universe friendly?" For many centuries, science has envisioned our planet as a ship sailing in a calm sea, with nary a tempest to disturb the still waters. We are told that for eons planet Earth and her surrounding neighbors have been untouched by large-scale catastrophes. Great cataclysms are things of the very distant past, and most likely, the equally distant future.

But what will happen if this sea we find ourselves in turns angry, thrashing and flailing and threatening to pull our ship under?

It has been said that the best indicator of the future is the past. If our perception of the past is proven flawed, then all predictions for the future must certainly be re-evaluated.

In the 20th century, the notion of the never-changing solar system was thrown into doubt by Immanuel Velikovsky's bestselling book, "Worlds in Collision." It was Velikovsky's assertion that as recently as a few thousand years ago, planets moved on unstable courses, and that these events were RECORDED in world mythologies, religions, and folklore. Another Velikovsky book, "Mankind in Amnesia," describes a horrific "Doomsday" event that was known as "the end of the world." He further described our pathological need to re-enact "the end of the world" through human sacrifice and tribal warfare - even though the conscious memory of this epoch evades us.

What of the recent history of our solar system? A cascade of space-age discoveries have thrown all previous assumptions about the Universe into question. Evidence of surprisingly recent cataclysmic activity has been found on all "rocky" surfaces in space, including asteroids, comets, and our second-nearest planetary neighbor, Mars. The Martian landscape features ennumerable enigmas, including an awe-inspiring chasm called Valles Marineris, which is equal in size to HUNDREDS of Grand Canyons. According to proponents of the "electric universe" theory, this colossal trench could not have been formed by flooding, or even "rifting" or a great "tearing" of the surface. Rather, it could only have been formed by an enormous electric "arc," because the unique features of the chasm can only be duplicated in laboratory experiments with electrical discharge.

The ancients may have had a better understanding of the planets than most people think. It happens that Mars (Eros) was a significant figure in ancient mythology. He was the warrior-god - the Babylonian Nergal, the Greek Ares - even the Latin Hercules and the Greek Heracles, were all names for the planet Mars.

There can be no doubt that two central themes can be found in all world religions and mythologies - the Golden Age, and the End of the World. Perhaps the ancient people were all relentless liars telling the SAME lie as a result of mass psychosis. Or perhaps their memories are an ever-present ghost, begging us to remember, both for their sake and ours.

Part III

At the age of 14, I sent a mental post card to my future self. It read, "When the signs are everywhere, the time wil be at hand, and you will KNOW." Which came first: did I receive the post card, or did I see the signs? I suppose it doesn't matter, because either way, I do REMEMBER.

At every moment in human history, people have seen "signs" of the end of the world. There are many reasons for this, but I think it originated at the same moment as our collective belief in the "man-God." Nothing is more frightening than the notion that the Creator of Everything is a large scale human - angry, jealous, vengeful, and demanding. If God is a man, then he might well be insane.

I know that God is not insane, but I still believe in the End of the World. It has ALREADY HAPPENED, and it will happen again, not because God is angry, indifferent, or judgmental, but because human beings create their own destiny. As Al Pacino said in The Devil's Advocate, "Free will is a bitch," and our will is and always has been to create a world of fear and death through preventable fuckery.

What are the signs that I claim to have seen? These are not theological. They are based on solid evidence, some scientific and some anecdotal, all providing pieces to the same child's puzzle. My eyes are trained on the heavens, and I do not like what I'm seeing.

I have written on this repeatedly over the past month. Again and again, the words "meteor" and "fireball" are appearing in news headlines around the globe, as people stand in awe at the wonderful, terrible spectre of fire blazing across the heavens. Of course, meteors are ALWAYS reaching the earth...but the past 6 weeks have produced more news items relating to meteors and other cosmic "impacts" than the previous YEAR OR MORE. June 3rd (Washingtion), June 5th (Los Angeles) June 10th (New Zealand) June 17th (Australia) June 20th (Seattle), June 26th (New Zealand) June 27th (Texas), July 7th (5 states in southern America.) Any simple keyword search on Google will prove this a reality.

I began focusing intently on this topic because of my recent interest in the asteroid Toutatis. On September 29th, 2004, this enormous body, 3 miles in diameter and 1.5 miles in width, is projected to pass within 963,000 miles of the earth - a VERY near miss in comic terms. I took a personal interest in this, because last year, I met a man who claimed to have insider's knowledge about our government's plans for Toutatis. He asserted that he worked on a secret missile defense project in Alaska, which was specifically designed to thwart an asteroid which would reach the earth on September 29th of this year.

The September date does not necessarily hold special fear for me...because I believe that things are happening already. I must apologize for my hubris, but I assert that one must be pathologically myopic to not see the indicators.

Meteor strikes...earthquakes...power outages...electrical explosions...freakish weather...lightning strikes...one need not be "searching" for these things in order to find them. A nuclear power plant outage in Phoenix AZ, in June in conjunction with electrical fireballs and "strange lights"...in the last three days, "unexplained" power outages at O'Hare Airport in Chicago, Logan Airport in Boston, and a city-wide blackout in Athens, Greece, site of the 2004 Olympics...in Tibet two days ago, a 6.7 earthquake...In the state of Oregon, 50 EARTHQUAKES in a one week period, with a 4.9 earthquake occuring last night, the night of a great thunder and lightning storm...A 4.7-5.0 earhquake in Israel, which occurred just days after I wrote an article entitled, "Why Is Israel Taking Earthquake Preparedness Measures?"...so-called "freak weather" (as described by meterologists) throughout China, Europe, and Canada.

And just yesterday, a report from the New York times, and carried by the Drudge Report, that the magnetic field of the Earth is "collapsing."

One could argue that I am only "noticing" these things because I WANT to notice them. I have spent many sleepless nights pondering that theory, because the last thing I want is to contribute to an unhealthy and irrational "hysteria" over things that might not happen. But for me, the last pieces of the puzzle have finally come together, convincing me beyond doubt that I am not profoundly mistaken.

My father, David Talbott, has spent the last 3 decades of his life examining the issue of planetary catastrohpe (for the record, I do NOT speak on his behalf, and he very likely shudders every time he sees me writing a new article.) In his research, he has made many contacts with the most accredited scientists, including physicists, astrophysicists, mathematicians, and experts on lightning phenomena. From a number of sources, we have received information that should shock and appall ALL thinking persons.

You may have heard recently of Internet II, which is described as "a nationwide project to develop the next generation of computer network applications to facilitate the research and education missions of universities." That sounds wonderful, but as Servando Gonalez writes in his article "Kiss Your Internet Goodbye," "Internet 2 will be fully controlled by the state. In order to access it, or to have e-mail access, you must be a member of, or be affiliated to, any of the government-authorized organizations and have a sort of security clearance. Internet 2 will be out of the reach of the general public, and every person trying to have unauthorized access to Internet 2 will be charged with terrorist activities, and severely penalized." (Source: http://www.rense.com/general36/inter.htm)

Unbeknownst to most, this project is part of a DELIBERATE EFFORT to RESTRICT space-age information to only the most esteemed universities, research institutions, and large corporations. Major laboratories and universities are now in RAPID TRANSITION to Internet II. They don't want you or me. members of the lowly "unwashed public," to have meaningful access to the ORIGINAL data coming from space exploration.

In other words, the scientific "mainstream" is taking rapid and (some might say) DESPERATE measures to prevent members of the public, including those whose taxes PAY THEIR SALARIES, from scrutinizing new data from space. They are insulating themselves in an effort to avoid being asked questions that they cannot possibly answer.

This can only be happening for two reasons:

1) The Establishment is aware that space-age discovery is repudiating the "sacred cows" of astronomy, including black holes, dark matter, dark energy, the overall gravitational model, and even Big Bang theory. Many powerful people will lose enormous amounts of grant money if these theories continue to be refuted.

2) The Establishment is aware of cosmic threats which would create widespread panic if known to the public.

Or 3) Both 1 and 2.

I stated at the outset that true peace of mind can only be found in the Present. I find myself returning increasingly (and gratefully) to that childlike state of unconcern for the future. The Present can and MUST serve us well..because in the End, it is all that we have.
