India's Shocking
New Sensation

The Asian Pacific Post - Vancouver
7-23-4

'Current baba' is India's shocking new sensation. Three times daily, Sadhu Mangal Das touches a live wire to keep himself intoxicated.

The 54-year-old holyman admits he started taking a cocktail of stimulants, including ganja, bhang and liquor after renouncing the world at the age of 10.

While none of these give him the kick anymore, Das says his current obsession has brought a surge of excitement into his life.

Das' eccentric habit has also left the medical world flummoxed. According to doctors, the human body can absorb currents up to 12 volts.

In the baba's case however, repeated exposure to electricity seems to have built up his body's tolerance levels to as much as 16 volts.

Interestingly Das has tried other grossly unconventional ways of getting high. Before he discovered his passion for electrical energy, the holy man used to get himself bitten by snakes and scorpions. He then took to consuming potions made from poisonous seeds and sulphos tablets.

Calling these people "Sadhus" is outrageous. These practises (drugs, &c) have nothing to do whatsoever with the things enjoined on Yogis by the ancient scriptures or mysticism in general.

Most (Western) people must consider this in creating an image of what a Sadhu is exactly.

Jeff,

I love the site in general, and you're doing an enormous service, but...I'd strongly suggest that you "consider the source" and laugh it off rather than publishing it, the next time anything comes in from " The Asian Pacific Post - Vancouver".

The latest so-called article of theirs that you published today is a total sham, where their absolutely silly claims regarding electriciy are concerned. A few minutes of simple research on their part would have stopped them from spouting such pedantic BS.

I've been working in electronics engineering for decades, including work with deadly high voltages. For the record, I have enough training and credtials (in electronics) to sink a battleship.

These yo-yos with their mumbo-jumbo about electricity would be tarred and feathered by anyone having even the slightest grasp of how electricty works, and it's danger to the human body.

Why?

"According to doctors, the human body can absorb currents up to 12 volts."

1. VOLTAGE is NOT what determines if someone is harmed by coming in contact with electricity.

CURRENT is the determining factor! Even high school physics demonstrations teach this fact. In fact, most schools have a simple Van De Graff Generator, with which, students bodies are subjected to HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF VOLTS (making ones hair stand on end, but doing no permanent damage to the body).

This is beacuse the CURRENT involved is limited to a tiny (safe) level, while the VOLTAGE is allowed to climb to very HIGH voltages. We are talking HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of times MORE than the "12 volts" these bozos claim will harm the human body.

CURRENT MATTERS NOT VOLTAGE - full stop. Any junior text book on the subjct will confirm this fact.

Under certain circumstances even a low voltage can be fatal, but it is rare. Mainly, it depends on BODY RESISTANCE, grounding, and how and where the voltage/current is applied.

As a rough guide, around 27 MILLIAMPS (27/1000 Ampere) of current passing through the heart muscle is normally enough to cause the heart to stop - cardiac arrest. Voltage is NOT the factor you worry about. The CURRENT (in amps or milliamps) is determined by things such as ones SKIN RESISTANCE (in ohms) and VOLTAGE, and how the body is GROUNDED.

Together they determine how much voltage will pass though the body tissue. Even millions of voltage may not be enough to pass a deadly amount of CURRENT in some circumstances.

Look up TESLA COILS with a Google search, as SEE (living) people connected directly to HIGH VOLTAGES!

2. no real doctor would ever be silly enough to spew such crap - other than perhaps a WITCH DOCTOR.

It's just plain laughable (and totally UNTRUE), to make such a numb-skull proclamation! Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

------------------------------------
"According to doctors, the human body can absorb currents up to 12 volts."

1. CURRENT is NOT Amps. They are 2 seperate things. CURRENTS are NOT measured in VOLTS.

CURRENT is measured in Amperes (Amps) and Milliamps, Microamps, etc. NOT VOLTS!!!!!!!!!

Also, the body does NOT "absorb" current or voltage.

------------------------------------
"In the baba's case however, repeated exposure to electricity seems to have built up his body's tolerance levels to as much as 16 volts."

What can I say, after the above facts have been brought to light. This is fools candy.

Idiot fuel.

"Heraldo" would love it.
-----------------------------------

BTW - our common telephone system works on around 48 Volts DC . Telephone technicians and installers make contact with this voltage often, and normally all one feels is a sharp tingle - just one tiny (practical) example of the thousands of "holes" in this utterly silly theory they spout.

I think maybe they've had one "jolt" too many! On the other hand, maybe a little "electro-therapy" might do them some good. ;O)

Please research technical articles a bit before publishing them. A few minutes surfing would have exposed this pathetic kiddie rant, which should be titled something like "Electricity for 1 and 2-year Olds".

Regards,
G. Browne
