- PESHAWAR - The Taliban on
Thursday claimed to have shot down a US military helicopter in Zabul province.Quoting
Taliban commander in Zabul, Mulla Abdul Qahhar, spokesman Mufti Latifullah
Hakimi told The News that the helicopter was downed in the Khak-i-Afghan
district while it was flying over Khak-i-Afghan and Dai Chopan districts.
He claimed an unspecified number of people on board were killed. The US
military in Bagram denied the Taliban claim. Hakimi also claimed that Taliban
fighters attacked three US-led coalition tanks with rockets near Hawari
village in the same district. All the tanks were destroyed and 10 US soldiers
were killed, he said. There was no independent confirmation of the claims.
AFP adds: Defence ministry spokesman Gen Zahir Azimi said two US troops
and four Afghan soldiers were injured in Ghor province when their convoy
was surrounded and fired at by armed assailants. A US army spokesman, however,
said, "I am unable to confirm reports at this stage."

and two soldiers from the fledgling Afghan army were injured in a skirmish
with local militia in central Afghanistan in the latest bout of pre-election
violence, the US military said Friday.

attacked an Afghan National Army convoy on Thursday, US spokesman Major
Rick Peat told a foreign news agency in a written statement.

- The attack took place some 45 kilometres (28 miles) north
of Chagcharan in the central province of Ghor. The wounded were evacuated
to the military hospital at Bagram air base for treatment where they were
in a stable condition, a US military statement said.

- The convoy consisted of 18 ANA soldiers, seven US soldiers
training them and two non-governmental organisation workers, it added.
