PESHAWAR - The Taliban on Thursday claimed to have shot down a US military helicopter in Zabul province.Quoting Taliban commander in Zabul, Mulla Abdul Qahhar, spokesman Mufti Latifullah Hakimi told The News that the helicopter was downed in the Khak-i-Afghan district while it was flying over Khak-i-Afghan and Dai Chopan districts. He claimed an unspecified number of people on board were killed. The US military in Bagram denied the Taliban claim. Hakimi also claimed that Taliban fighters attacked three US-led coalition tanks with rockets near Hawari village in the same district. All the tanks were destroyed and 10 US soldiers were killed, he said. There was no independent confirmation of the claims. AFP adds: Defence ministry spokesman Gen Zahir Azimi said two US troops and four Afghan soldiers were injured in Ghor province when their convoy was surrounded and fired at by armed assailants. A US army spokesman, however, said, "I am unable to confirm reports at this stage."
