- The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on Friday ruled that
five Jewish 15-year-old girls suspected of attacking a Palestinian family
from East Jerusalem near the Old City remain under house arrest for one
week.

- The judge rejected a police request to keep the girls
in detention until the conclusion of legal proceedings against them, Israel
Radio reported.

- The girls were arrested late Wednesday.

- On their way back from circling the Temple Mount marking
the conclusion of the tenth of Tevet fast day, 15 youths allegedly encountered
a Palestinian couple and their eight-year-old daughter at IDF Square. They
hurled stones at the family and knocked the father to the ground, causing
ligh! t injuries, and stole the mother's purse.

- A police officer who attended the scene immediately called
for back up, and the officers who arrived arrested the five girls, while
the rest of the group escaped.

- One of the girls was jailed last month for putting up
illegal posters belonging to an ultra right-wing faction. The girls refused
to cooperate with the police, maintaining that they were arrested for political
reasons.

- Police on Friday arrested two female friends of the five
girls when they began screaming and attacking officers in the courthouse.
