What Crashed On Mars?

From Scott Garrett

Jeff,

I tracked down the website where the photo of water on Mars came from and then came across a series of photos that showed a blur in the distance. It apparently intrigued the NASA scientists because they took picture after picture of the object in the distance and then actually moved the rover over to the object to take a closer look.

In the attached link, you'll see that an actual craft that has crashed and burned on Mars. Is it a probe from the US or Russia that crashed? I'll leave that up to the viewer and NASA to decide. It is clearly a metallic object and a crash site.

Hi Jeff,

I think you will find the answer to What Crashed on Mars here:

http://www.space.com/astronotes/astronotes.html

"...After successfully climbing out of the stadium-sized crater, engineers are now steering the robot toward a part of the spacecraft's entry hardware. The discarded gear tumbled to the surface of Mars, part of the landing equipment that protected the rover from its heated plunge through Mars' atmosphere in January."

Merry Christmas to all,

It's the rover's heat shield which was jettisoned during descent.
