- Respect MP George Galloway received a rapturous welcome
at a packed rally a day after a ferocious showdown with US senators.
-
- Hundreds turned up at a meeting in London to celebrate
his general election victory over Labour's Oona King.
-
- He was hailed as the "man of the moment" after
returning from Washington today.
-
- While there he was quizzed by a Senate sub committee
over allegations he profited from Iraq's oil-for-food scandal.
-
- After his interrogation he was convinced he had successfully
rubbished the claims that he received vouchers for 20 million barrels of
oil from Saddam Hussein's regime.
-
- He also used his impassioned performance to denounce
the Iraq war and attack the United States government as "the villains
of the piece".
-
- Arriving tonight at Friends Meeting House he received
a three-minute standing ovation from the full house.
-
- The crowd raised their hands to applaud him, cheered
loudly and chanted "Respect" as he made his way to the platform,
where he stood to receive their acclaim.
-
- Linda Smith, chairing the meeting, said; "I think
you will agree that tonight we have got a fantastic platform of speakers,
including the man of the moment, George Galloway."
-
- The first to address the rally was Mark Serwotka, general
secretary of the PCS Union, who saluted Mr Galloway's "spectacular
victory" in the Bethnal Green and Bow constituency.
