-
- TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) -- An
earthquake struck Sunday morning several miles north of Lake Tahoe, according
to a preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey.
-
- A Nevada County Sheriff's Department dispatcher said
there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries from the quake,
felt as far away as Sacramento, about 100 miles southeast of here.
-
- At Glenshire General Store in Truckee, workers prepared
to dash out the door as the ground shook.
-
- "It was just one big thump. Everything shook but
nothing fell off the shelves," said owner Tina Stull. "It was
just a big, strong jolt. We had a lot of scared people. Everybody just
sort of froze."
-
- Employee Pam McCowan added: "It went on long enough
that we considered running out of the store."
-
- The magnitude-4.8 quake hit at 11:45 a.m. and was centered
about 8 miles east of Truckee.
-
- Bill Straka, of Palo Alto, was hiking in the Sierra Nevada
near Donner Pass at about 7,300 feet when the quake hit.
-
- "We heard a rumbling sound, enough so that I stopped
and wondered what it was. Then we felt a fairly sharp little bump under
us on the ground," Straka said by cell phone.
