"Lincoln's personal triumph, as it turned out, happened to be the nation's salvation."

What triumph?  What salvation?

It seems to me that Lincoln's suicidal tendencies were visited on the nation, which committed suicide during his administration.  America certainly descended into a permanent state of internal and external mass murder, thanks wholly to Lincoln's bloody model of Yankee imperialism.  Until Lincoln, the world had never seen such wholesale and wanton destruction of life and property.  Karl Marx congratulated Lincoln and was influenced by his ruthlessness in suppressing an independence movement.

Have you never read the Declaration of Independence?  The Southerners did and were completely authorized by it to secede from the "union."  Lincoln was in total violation of that founding document of whatever it meant to be an American.  He nullified the Declaration of Independence.

I certainly agree that Lincoln's character became America's destiny, that he guaranteed the rise of Wilson, FDR and the dropping of two atom bombs on unsuspecting civilians by a little crook from Kansas City.

Of course, Lincoln and his apologists justified everything with the hypocritical banner of ending slavery, which Lincoln admitted repeatedly was not his goal.  And were the slaves better off after the war?  Lincoln's wanton slaughter made us all slaves to the War Department from then on.  We still are, aren't we, to this day?  All because of Lincoln's War.

Bush wants to do what Lincoln did:  imprison his anti-war critics.  He's already suspended habeas corpus and has his camps ready and waiting for his American enemies, just like the man you refer to as "arguably America's greatest president."  While you appear to see through Bush's defective personality, you also appear bewitched by the man who got 600,000 Americans slaughtered - for what?  For the preservation of his power over the whole United States?

And how has History vindicated Reconstruction?  Whose history - the winners'?  Twelve years of military occupation of the defeated South - roughly the same occupation as Rumsfeld wants in Iraq, which is definitely not defeated.  But it's Lincoln's model he's following.

And then you call Natan Sharansky a "human rights activist."  I guess you don't count Palestinians as humans.  But Lincoln didn't think his opponents were humans, either.  You should try to put yourself in the place of a Northerner ("Copperhead") who opposed Lincoln's hateful warmongering.

Abraham Lincoln must be repudiated and denounced as the curse of the ages, the ultimate monster of American politics.  His self-hate and blood-lust led to all the unspeakable horrors of the 20th Century and to the uranium dust-covered nightmare that now confronts us.
